Since the earliest times we were given a "sweet tooth", so we could bulk up on the sweet summer fruits and berries, to help us survive the brutal winters. For most of the year early man survived without any carbohydrates (sugar) in their diet.
In modern times we have massively abused this survival tool, and turned it into the main cause of most of our illnesses. When anything sweet is put on the table, very few people can resist the allure of its sweet reward and dopamine infusion, thus reinforcing the ADDICTION.
Americans consume 152 pounds of sugar a year, or 3 pounds (6 cups) in a week. We are eating "Desert for Breakfast" (high sugar), cake, pastry, and sugary cereal, plus a huge coffee or two loaded with sugar. Remember sugar stimulates INSULIN which lowers the blood sugar and STORES IT AS FAT. Sugar is added to more foods than you could think, McDonalds burgers to prevent patty shrinkage, pasta sauce, yogurt, canned or boxed soups, nut butters, salad dressing, etc. When we consume breads, cakes, cookies, candy, pasta, bagels, pizza, etc, they are broken down to sugars in our body. There are 61 different names for sugar that are used on food labels to fool you. These PROCESSED FOODS are calorie dense, but nutrition poor, and contain inflammatory processed vegetable oils.
Sadly Mom, Dad, and our beloved Grandparents were our earliest Pushers. They rewarded us with sweets, at birthdays, if we behaved and when we were in pain. This BRAIN CIRCUIT is the earliest form of ADDICTION, setting up a brain circuit ruled by dopamine. Heroin and Cocaine release a huge burst of Dopamine into our system, BUT this same REWARD=RELIEF circuit is primed at an early age by Sugar.
SUGARS and everything that turns into sugar quickly, are the main cause of INFLAMMATION, which is the root cause of almost all of our medical illnesses.
MODERATION is KEY.
