There has been a lot of discussion about vaping in the news recently. What is most interesting is that a lot of people know very little about what it is and how dangerous it can be. To make it more confusing, the big money vaping industry continues to release self serving praise of their many products while downplaying the many risks and dangers. Recently, Dr Sarper Taskiran, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Child Mind Institute, discussed the subject and its ADDICTIVENESS.
First, most people really do not know that it can lead to serious ADDICTION. Many people say that since it claims not to be as bad as smoking cigarettes. They tend to be dismissive about its danger, especially to teenagers who consider it to be "cool" and popular. He says: "teens are after innovation" and that they are intrigued with JUUL's sleek packaging and design, plus their candy flavors. Although the companies that produce these products deny that they are marketing toward youths, they suggest that vaping can make one happier and improve one's social status.
The FDA announced that it will be taking a serious look at how the producers of these products market to the "under- 21" audience and stated that e-cigarettes sales are currently being used by more than 2 million middle and high-school students. This news has reached teachers, health professionals and parents to some degree: and, as a result they are beginning to learn more about how to talk to young people about the downside of vaping and educating themselves on the subject of vaping's ability to create ADDICTION.
Second, e-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine. Because of that, vaping is extremely ADDICTIVE and teens are more susceptible to ADDICTION because their brains are still developing! This means that they can be more likely to use drugs and alcohol as well. Dr Taskiran has observed, in adolescence, that ADDICTION can affect the ability to focus. Vaping initially increases their alertness and attention, but then they experience a decrease in attention span.
The real issue is that these youths need professional help from people who know how to talk to them about ADDICTION. If you are a parent of a child who is vaping' contact me for more information and help.
